New Haven Academic Super Bowl Teams State winners for the Fine Arts team
Academic Super Bowl consists of teams in 5 subject areas: English, Math, Science, Fine Arts and Social Studies. Each year the teams compete by answering questions in their subject area from a certain historical period. This year’s theme was Ireland in the 20th century. Beginning in November, students begin studying material and reading books in their chosen subject area. Students may compete on no more than two teams. Each team consists of up to 5 team members. Students compete by answering 25 timed multiple-choice questions as a team.
The competition season begins in late February. The students compete in two invitationals before the end of March, one of these being the Conference championship meet. At the conference meet, Isabelle Ebert and Ayden Hannan earned Second Team All-Conference Honors for the Fine Arts Team and Isabelle Ebert earned Honorable Mention All-Conference Honors for the English Team. At the end of April students compete in the area meet (the state qualifying meet). At the area meet teams are divided into classes based on the size of their school. While there may be 30 teams at an area meet, there may be only 7 in Class 1 (which is NHHS’ class). All teams around the state compete in the area competition at the same time. Scores are then sent to the state at the top 6 teams in Class 1 in each subject area are invited to Purdue University in May to compete in the Academic Super Bowl State Finals.
New Haven teams competed at the area meet on April 22 at Bishop Luers High School. Class 1 competitors included Carroll, Columbia City, Homestead, New Haven, Northrop and Snider. The Fine Arts team of Isabelle Ebert and Ayden Hannan finished in first place scoring 21 of 25 points. On April 24 the IASP (Indiana Association of School Principals) announced that New Haven’s Fine Arts team was one of 6 teams to qualify for the state meet.
On Saturday May 10, Isabelle, Ayden and their coach (Sarah Householder) traveled to Purdue University to compete with the best of the best! In the Fine Arts competition students must answer questions about visual art and artists as well as vocal artists of the time period. New Haven answered the first 9 questions correctly and went toe to toe with perennial state power Penn. When the dust settled, New Haven came away with a first-place win over Penn High School, Plainfield High School, Evansville North High School, Fishers High School and Lawrence Central High School.
“I am extremely proud of not just Isabelle and Ayden, but of the entire team. When most schools show up with 20 kids or more, I am honored to take my 8-10 and see them succeed. I enjoy giving them a non-sports opportunity to compete and represent their school and their community.” - Sarah Householder, coach.
Congratulations Isabelle and Ayden!
