The Setting…
The high school
experience in East Allen County Schools (EACS) can be found in a variety
of settings. By choice, high school enrollments have been kept low to
personalize the educational process and to accommodate the needs of
students. The junior/senior high setting is available at Heritage
Jr./Sr. High School, Leo Jr./Sr. High School, and Woodlan Jr./Sr. High
School comprising grades 7-12. The high school setting is available at New Haven High School. With this structure in mind, we will refer to the high school as
grades 9-12 encompassed within both settings.
The Task…
The
focus of our high schools is maintained in educating the students to
become skilled in comprehension, communication, problem-solving,
decision-making, and inter-relational dynamics. During the high school
years, students continue to narrow their paths of study in preparation
for the task of life-long learning, whether that is in immediate
employment or additional post-secondary education including college
preparation, technical preparation, apprenticeships, or vocational
training. EACS staff is dedicated to preparing the students to become
successful leaders and participants in their community and in our
rapidly expanding global market economy.
The Curriculum…
Students
in the high school are provided a curriculum that will allow them to
meet the highest established standards set by the State of Indiana for
graduation through achieving the Indiana Academic Honors Diploma
requirements, the CORE 40 requirements, or the Indiana High School
Diploma requirements. The curriculum includes language arts,
mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language including
opportunities in multiple languages, fine arts including multiple bands,
choirs, and art courses, technology education, and computer
applications, health and physical education, vocational agriculture and
vocational/technical education. Each curricular area maintains standards
that support significant development of the skills necessary for future
success. Students are given opportunities to take advanced placement
courses, participate in the Interdisciplinary Cooperative Education
(I.C.E.) program, attend the area vocational school, gain college credit
through early enrollment and dual credit programs, and participate in
the "Five Schools, One Campus" program of shared courses among EACS
schools.
Students may also become involved in a
variety of other extracurricular activities including the Academic Super
Bowl competition, Hoosier Spell Bowl, speech and drama activities from a
participant level in productions to the competitions level, FFA
competitions, and foreign language competitions or Marching Band. A
variety of clubs, organizations, and opportunities exist to assist
students in developing leadership skills, teamwork, cultural and ethnic
understanding, and self-confidence. EACS students have been successful
in achieving district, sectional, regional, state, and national
recognition in a variety of activities.
Another
component of the extracurricular program includes multiple levels of
interscholastic athletic competition. Most major sports activities are
available for both boys and girls at the competitive level.
