In East Allen County Schools, we give the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) screener to all students in grades K, 2, and 5. Then, the students who fall in the top 20% of those screener scores, will be tested further in order to determine recommendation for the EDGE program. Students may be recommended for General Intellectual, Mathematics, or Language Arts placement. Building-level teams will make recommendations to the district-level committee for final decision on placement into the EDGE program. Parents then receive a letter if their student has qualified.
New Students:
New students will be tested using the CogAT on an as-needed basis. If documentation is available showing identification in a previous district, the building-level team has the ability to make a recommendation and then the district-level committee will make a final decision on placement into the EDGE program. If a student transfers to EACS after 5th grade and either has not been previously identified OR is not admitted into the EDGE program, a parent may petition for testing. Please see page 11-12 of the EACS High Ability Plan for instructions and the form.
Parent Petition Process:
If a student is not in Grades K, 2, or 5, a parent may request testing. Please see page 11-12 of the EACS High Ability Plan for instructions and the form.
