Dear East Allen County Schools Family,

Marilyn HissongAs we spring forward for Daylight Saving Time on March 10, we also are leaping right into our Spring sport competitions.  It will be great to watch our students compete in Track & Field, Golf, Baseball, Softball, Tennis, Soccer, musicals, concerts, plays, and Scholastic Writing and Art competitions.

By the end of March our schools will be on Spring Break and many students and their families will be planning some time away before returning in April for the last weeks of school.  As we approach Spring Break, the Board and I understand that quality time with family is very important. We respectfully request that parents honor our vacation dates and not take their students out of school for extra time to extend the break.  Honoring instructional time is extremely important since instructional time in the classroom with the teacher is a critical component of improving student academic achievement.

Next, East Allen County Schools is celebrating our success at completing the Kindness Challenge.  EACS has two schools that were National finalists in the top 10 (New Haven Middle School and Southwick Elementary).  We are so proud of all of our schools for completing the Kindness Challenge.  We are looking forward to continuing this next year.  As a part of our Kindness Challenge we started collecting money for Riley Children’s Hospital.  Our goals was to raise $9,717.00 which equated to one dollar per child in our District.  We surpassed that goal by raising $16,833.07 as of March 7th.  Thank you students, parents, grandparents, and staff for your great support of this worthy cause.  We have a lot of our very own East Allen County Schools’ families that receive services from Riley Children’s Hospital.

Other exciting news that is extremely exciting, EACS is in the process of developing a career center for high school students. These career center programs will be available to all EACS high school students and will prepare them for immediate entry into the workforce or for continued technical education. Dual college credits will be offered in all programs. Program areas will include manufacturing, health care, cybersecurity and construction trades. Our initial target date for opening these programs was the fall of 2020, but the demand from the business community for skilled workers has prompted us to open one of the programs ahead of schedule. This August we will be launching an Automation and Robotics program available to 11th and 12th grade students. This high demand program will have a manufacturing emphasis and will train students to program, maintain and operate advanced automated equipment. Students or parents who are interested in the program can contact their guidance counselor. You can also contact our Career and Technical Education Director, Tim Wiegand, at 260-446-0100 ext. 3101 to learn about all of the coming career initiatives in the district.  For more information regarding the career center, please click on the “Career Center” button below.  It is a short video sharing some details regarding the new career center.

Finally, please remember these important dates:
