THREE EAST ALLEN COUNTY SCHOOLS RECEIVE TOP STATE HONORS

Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett recently announced Indiana’s Four Star

School Awardees for the 2010-11 school year. The Four Star School Award, the state’s highest

distinction, was given to 162 schools out of 1,780 public schools (which include EACS’ LeoJr./Sr. High, Leo Elementary and Cedarville Elementary), for their attendance rates, student

achievement and performance on the I-STEP+.

“This serves as an opportunity to recognize the great work of educators throughout Indiana,”

Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett said. “These schools encourage a culture

of high expectations for their students. The students and educators who meet these

expectations on a daily basis should be extremely proud of this honor.”

To be considered a Four Star School, a school’s combined English 10 and Algebra 1 End of

Course Assessment, or English/Language Arts and Math ISTEP+, passing percentages must

fall into the top 25th percentile when compared to schools statewide. A school must also have

made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the federal No Child Left Behind Act to qualify.

The Four Star School recognition is a non-monetary award given annually by the state. To earn

the distinction, a school must be fully accredited by the Indiana State Board of Education, meet

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB),

and perform in the top 25 percent of all schools in the state in each of the following areas:

· I-STEP+ Percent Passing both English/LA and Math

· I-STEP+ Language Proficiency T-Score

· I-STEP+ Math Proficiency T-Score

· Attendance Rate

“This is a great honor and we are extremely proud of our schools,” Superintendent of East Allen

County Schools Dr. Karyle Green said. “Our administrators, staff and students work extremely

hard at meeting State standards and achieving academic success.”

Our mission of East Allen County Schools is to inspire in all students a passion for learning while developing knowledge,

skills and character necessary to become responsible contri

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                    New Haven, IN.   December 13, 2011

EAST ALLEN COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES
EAST ALLEN UNIVERSITY:  AN EARLY COLLEGE ACADEMY

At Tuesday’s Board meeting the East Allen County Schools Board of School Trustees voted to move forward with their plan to establish an early college high school by entering into a partnership with Vincennes University. Superintendent Dr. Karyle Green stated, “East Allen University will be a highly focused high school program where students can earn an Indiana Core 40 high school diploma while also earning college credits toward an Associate Degree from Vincennes University. The program will include internships with business partners, project based learning, and inquiry learning. One of the key concepts of the school will be a personalized school environment promoting the inclusion and belonging of all students leading to high academic achievement through enhanced support structures”.

The corporation has been working since early summer to design an innovative 9-12 program to go into the closed Paul Harding High School space.  The school is scheduled to open in August with approximately 60-100 freshmen and grow to approximately 350-425 students over the next four years.  Current 8th grade students from across the district as well as those from outside the East Allen boundaries have the opportunity to apply.  Doug Hicks assistant principal at New Haven High School and a leader in planning the school indicated daily schedules will include additional study and resource time for all students as well as daily collaboration time for staff.  He also stated students will have access to the vast online Vincennes media resources, that students would be utilizing a high level of technology, focusing on 21st century skills, with an emphasis on social and character skill building.  Of great benefit to students and parents is that up to 62 transferable university credits can be earned at no cost or a very minimal cost to students through the Vincennes University partnership.

Current EACS 8th grade students and their parents will be invited to meetings in January to learn more about the opportunities of East Allen University and how to apply for the new school.  In addition, meetings will be scheduled in early February for students outside of the district who may be interested in the Early College Academy at East Allen University.

Currently there are over 250 early colleges across the county and that number is expected to exceed 300 by next fall.  The early college concept utilized by Vincennes University is based on the research of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with 86% of graduates pursuing additional higher education.

Our mission of East Allen County Schools is to inspire in all students a passion for learning while developing knowledge, skills and character necessary to become responsible contributors to the local and global society.

Principal's Desk

I would like to welcome parents, students, and community to 2011-12 school year. As we enthusiastically look forward to the upcoming school year, we can celebrate and be proud of our accomplishments in the previous school year.

The 2010-2011 school year was an outstanding school year for Leo Jr/Sr High School. The class of 2011 was the 104th graduating class from Leo Jr/Sr High School. We are very proud of the class of 2011. All 240 seniors enrolled in the 2011 class graduated on June 12th. This is an outstanding achievement! Kudos to the parents, teachers and students in the class of 2011!

Our Academic Super Bowl teams were state champions in English and Fine Arts. Mr. Rothert, Academic Super Bowl team’s coach said, “We won two state championships, which I think has never been done at Leo before!” And yes, the football team was regional champions.

Thanks to a wonderful faculty and community, our students also experienced academic success in the classroom during the 2010-2011 school year. Leo Middle School students tested 2-3 grade levels above the norm on NWEA and Acuity Test scores. Leo Jr/Sr High School students were above the state average for the ISTEP and ECA Tests. We experienced significant increases in seventh and eighth grade ISTEP Language Arts (9%) and Math (9%) and ECA Algebra (12%) and Language Arts (15%).

As Leo Lions, we have much to be grateful for! We look forward to the 2011-2012 school year with great anticipation. We expect all of our students to achieve at the highest levels. As a faculty and administration, we want our students to enjoy their Leo educational experience. Once again, welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. We wish all of our students and parents a wonderful and successful school year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Neal Brown, III
