The Setting…
There
are 9 elementary school attendance areas within the East Allen County
Schools (EACS) district. In the New Haven and Paul Harding attendance
areas, the elementary schools house students in Kindergarten through
grade Five. In the Heritage, Leo, and Woodlan attendance areas,
elementary schools house students in Kindergarten through grade Six.
Students are expected to attend the neighborhood school in which they
reside; however, parents may apply for their child to attend another
school in the district by following the guidelines outlines by the
Office of Student Services ("Choice" program). The East Allen County
Schools follow Indiana guidelines to determine class size.
The Task…
The
elementary grades focus on the individual student and the development
of basic skills. A special emphasis is given to having students reading
on grade level by the time they are in third grade. This is supported
through Reading Recovery and a Balanced Literacy program. As students
move into the intermediate grades, continued emphasis is placed on skill
development in conjunction with problem solving and higher level
thinking skills. In addition to the intellectual focus, the staff at
the elementary level emphasize the importance of positive social,
physical, and emotional development.
The Curriculum…
EACS
elementary schools offer students a solid core of academic experiences
that include reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies,
science, and health. These are complimented by special area classes in
art, music physical education, and technology.
Students
in the intermediate grades have opportunities to participate in
intramural activities as well as academic experiences including the
Hoosier Spell Bowl, Hoosier M.A.T.H., Allen County Spelling Bee, and
Geography Bee. Other programs and activities available include the
